How are box-office numbers reported and estimated?
Early figures are estimates
The weekend numbers published on a Sunday are usually studio estimates based on partial reporting and projection of the final day. Actual figures reported later can move up or down, and small revisions are routine rather than a sign anything went wrong.
Gross is not profit
A reported box-office gross is total ticket revenue before the many costs behind a release, including the share kept by theaters, marketing and production. A large gross does not establish profit, because the costs are rarely public and vary widely.
Comparisons need context
Comparing totals across years without adjusting for ticket prices, the number of screens, or release patterns can mislead. A sensible comparison notes the release scale and the period, rather than treating a raw total as a direct measure of popularity.
